I’m back on the laptop Typing away, no longer twiddling my thumbs on an tiny screen – im talking, a manual keyboard…if only it was a typewriter. This is the thing – the mechanical keyboard has obvious purpose, a function, a role within society – something that I may, currently, lack. Oh shut up Crass, they would say. Anyway, in order to be productive one must, you must, delegate things to a role, a function – don’t just rely on something or someone to do it all – that’s not efficient. There is something beautiful about a good delegated something or someone, in that they explicitly give their purpose away, single things that do one job and do it well….. People used to laugh, I bought a whole fucking PC to uni, big tower, keyboard and mouse, dual monitor display, the lot. It was called, nicknamed, ‘The Rig’. And it was so great, it genuinely afforded me the opportunity to be productive, getting up and sitting at my rig, meant going to work. The keyboard did keyboard things, the mouse did mouse things and everything was just great – it was a machine sitting on my desk – i don’t think I ever turned it off. The point is, that each component of that rig was specialized. The mouse couldn’t do, what the keyboard does and the keyboard what the mouse. But when you look at my phone, the thing I’ve used to post these things, it can do it all, I can write one of these and call me mom at the same time – brilliant. But, half my of what my phone can do I don’t even use, and won’t ever even use – is that efficient, is that as efficient as using 100% of the buttons on my mechanical keyboard. What percentage of your phone’s purpose are you actually using and tapping into? My dad used to say that – “you don’t even know how to use that thing, barely use any of it”. So then, where am I going with this? you tell me. Cool though.
. The rig obviously followed me wherever i went, whenever i moved – not as frequently as a laptop would, or could but when i relocated the rig came. Now, not every rig set up was the same. Although, im miles away as we speak, the rigs now right in front of me. I’ve got my work laptop, with the broken charger (yes, i did break it) sat upon three toilets rolls – all uniform in height, providing a good amount of leverage. Sat upon a absolutely gorgeous, rusting iron legged, old wooden slated table top i got off some off some emirati women. DOnt forget the camping chair. This is the first time I have done this, set up a rig here…and it made me feel happy. It made me write this even. For me there is something beautiful, even in the ugliest of rigs.
